Description
Near Iceland’s Jökulsárlón glacier melt lagoon, there is a much-photographed black beach filled with chunks of ice. Small icebergs calve off of the retreating face of the Breiđamerkurjökull glacier and float in the lagoon until they melt down to an even smaller size, and can wash through the outlet from the lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean, past a few rocky outcrops on which a lighthouse stands. Many of the mini-bergs get caught on the beach for a time, washing in and out on the tide while they continue melting away. Here a couple of members of our travel group have gone for a stroll looking at another cluster of ice and mini-bergs, gleaming blue-white within the slate grey-green of the overcast conditions.
