The island of Crete is a fascinating travel destination. Tiny, populated by an independent yet friendly people, with land ranging from coasts to flat lands to rugged mountains cut by deep gorges, its culture and long history is visible everywhere. Churches and chapels dot the landscape, including the Chapel of St. Nicholas shown here in the harbour of the popular tourist resort town of Georgioupolis. Dawn lights distant clouds while most of the land still has not escaped the shadows.
