Description
This famous lagoon in Iceland is called Jökulsárlón. It’s at the foot of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, just off the main highway near Vatnajökull National Park. Formed only a few decades ago when the glacier began to recede from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the lagoon continues growing in size due to the on-going glacier melt. The lagoon has as much as doubled in size over the past ~15 years, and eventually a deep fjord may occupy this location. Today, icebergs calve off the retreating ice face and float in the lagoon until they melt down small enough to wash out onto the black sand beach, and then into the ocean beyond. It’s an amazing place to make photographs, or just to stand and wonder about the past and future of this region of ice and water.
